The Q Ball is a highly functional, all-purpose folder that blends an unconventional approach to ergonomics with a compact, exceptionally capable blade style. Pulling the bearing toward the butt of the handle releases the pressure and allows the blade to be easily closed with one hand without having to place your fingers near the edge. ==Edge-U-Cation®: Adjusting and Removing Screws from Your Spyderco Knife==

The earliest Spyderco knives all featured pinned or riveted construction similar to that used on traditional pocketknives for centuries. While durable, this style of assembly left little opportunity for adjustment of a knife’s action (short of tapping it with a hammer). Although we still make a few knives this way, most of our current production uses screw-together construction. This method makes it easier to precisely align all the components of the knife during assembly, allows tuning of the knife’s action, and simplifies repair of the knife. However, it also leaves the screws vulnerable to loosening or even getting lost over time.

To ensure that the screws of our knives stay where they belong and retain their proper factory adjustment for as long as possible, Spyderco uses threadlocking compound (most commonly known by the brand name Loctite®) on our assembly screws. Applied as a liquid to a screw’s threads, threadlocker cures and hardens after the screw is tightened, binding to the female threads to help keep the screw from loosening with time.

Loctite comes in several different strengths to support different types of industrial applications. Its strength is also measured at two levels: The “break” strength is its initial resistance to torque after it cures, while its “prevail” strength is its resistance to torque after the initial bond has been broken. After extensive in-house testing and an in-depth review of the knives that were returned to us for warranty repair, Spyderco chose to use high-strength Loctite in all its US-made products more than 10 years ago. For the vast majority of our customers, this has worked out very well, maintaining the proper tension of their screws over a long service life and preventing the loosening and loss of screws.

Today’s knife customers, however, are more inclined to adjust their knives, add aftermarket parts and accessories, or simply take their knives apart to see how they “tick.” For some of them, removing assembly screws that have been treated with high-strength Loctite has proven challenging. To help ease that burden, we thought we would share the method used by our own warranty repair technicians to remove stubborn screws.

1. Ensure that you have the proper size Torx® driver for your screws and that the driver head is in good condition. A straight, screwdriver-style driver works best.
2. Place your knife on a workbench or other hard surface. Use a few layers of paper towel or rag to protect the handle from scratches.
3. Insert the tip of the Torx driver into the screw head and ensure that it seats properly.
4. Tap the end of the handle of the driver several times with a hammer to “shock” the screw and break the Loctite bond.
5. Maintain a firm, constant, downward pressure on the Torx driver as you rotate it to remove the screw.
6. If this method is not successful on the first try, repeat as necessary.

Although Loctite’s manufacturer recommends using heat to loosen its bond on screws, their specifications state that a temperature of more than 360 degrees Fahrenheit must be reached for high-strength Loctite to soften. Such temperatures could easily damage the scales and other components of your knife. Instead, we recommend the process described above. If it is not successful, please remember that you can always send your knife to Spyderco with $5.00 for return shipping and we will loosen the screws for you. To make life even easier, we recently decided to change our policy. All US-made Spyderco knives are now being assembled with medium-strength Loctite to make end-user screw removal easier.

On April 8-9, the Spyderco Crew shared our wares at the 42nd Annual Oregon Knife show, organized by the Oregon Knife Collectors Association (OKCA). Attracting more than 3,000 visitors from all over the United States, this show is a time-honored tradition in the Northwest and brings together a broad spectrum of custom knife makers, collectors, and manufacturers to share their common interest in all things related to knives.

As its name implies, the Lil’ Temperance 3 is the third-generation expression of this remarkable folding knife design. A shining example of Spyderco’s passion for Constant Quality Improvement (C.Q.I.), to truly appreciate the qualities that make this knife so special, it helps to explore the rich history of its predecessors.

The original Lil’ Temperance was designed by Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser to distill the high-performance characteristics of his iconic Temperance™ fixed blade into a pocket-friendly folding knife. Like the Temperance, he envisioned the Lil’ Temperance as both a full-service utility tool and a potential personal-defense weapon. It therefore had to offer extreme cutting performance, exceptional structural strength, and highly refined ergonomics that supported its martial application. Introduced in 2001, the Lil’ Temperance accomplished all these things with distinctive style. It featured a full-flat-ground leaf-shaped blade crafted from CPM® 440V particle metallurgy stainless steel. The blade had a very minimal ricasso (the unbeveled portion of the blade nearest the handle) to maximize the length of the cutting edge while keeping the overall blade length to just over three inches. Its Trademark Round Hole™ was fully accessible from either side to support swift one-handed opening with either hand.

The Lil’ Temperance’s blade was supported by Spyderco’s patented Compression Lock™ mechanism. Glesser insisted that the lock be “Martial Blade Craft (MBC) rated,” which meant that it had to withstand at least 200 inch pounds of pressure per inch of blade length. The Compression Lock easily achieved this standard and its location on the spine of the handle made one-handed closing of the knife safe and simple. The stainless steel liners that formed the framework of the lock were nested within 3-D-machined green G-10 handle scales. The top surface of the peel-ply G-10 near the upper perimeter of the handle featured a non-slip, checkered texture, while the remainder of each scale was precision machined to create a thinner, smoother shelf. At the bottom of this shelf, along the centerline of the handle, were three concave “divots” that aligned with matching holes in the knife’s clip. Each of these index points served as an axis for the thumb and index or middle finger that allowed the knife to be quickly spun from standard grip to reverse grip—a technique used in some systems of martial knife use. The Lil’ Temperance’s clip was also unique in that its edges were folded 90 degrees to reduce the contact surface on the pocket and promote a smoother draw. It was configured for right side tip-up or tip-down carry and its design was refined several times during the knife’s active production.
In addition to the Lil’ Temperance’s leaf-shaped blade, Spyderco also made a version of the knife with an upswept, trailing-point blade reminiscent of a classic Bowie knife. Billed the Lil’ Temperance 2, it was also initially made with CPM 440V blade steel. Later, both versions were switched to CPM S30V and offered with a choice of PlainEdge™ or fully serrated SpyderEdge™ cutting edges. Manufactured at Spyderco’s U.S. factory in Golden, Colorado, the Lil’ Temperance and Lil’ Temperance 2 were ultimately discontinued in the mid 2000’s.

Today, interest in these designs remains high and original examples of both versions are highly prized by collectors. Based on this near cult-like following, Spyderco decided to update and reintroduce the design in a leaner, simpler form that takes full advantage of our current state-of-the-art manufacturing methods.

The Lil’ Temperance 3 still boasts the unmistakably classic lines of the original, but in a leaner, simpler form. Its broad, leaf-shaped blade is full-flat ground from CPM S30V particle metallurgy stainless steel to give it an incredible balance of strength, edge geometry, corrosion resistance, and low-friction cutting performance. The iconic Trademark Round Hole™ is fully accessible from both sides to support swift, ambidextrous, one-handed opening and a strategically placed section of jimping (textured grooves) on the thumb ramp provides a positive thumb purchase for enhanced control during use.

Like its predecessors, the Til’ Temperance 3 employs Spyderco’s patented Compression Lock™ mechanism to lock the blade securely open during use. Built on a foundation of skeletonized stainless steel liners, this high-strength lock is nested into CNC-machined recesses in the handle’s textured G-10 scales. This advanced, open-backed handle design reduces overall weight, simplifies cleaning, and keeps this amazingly capable knife thin and pocket friendly.
True to the design’s original spirit as a potential personal-defense tool, it includes a single indexing “divot” in each handle scale. These divots align precisely with the concave portion of the knife’s four-position pocket clip to provide a handy pivot axis for grip-change maneuvers. The clip itself has been updated to Spyderco’s time-tested hourglass design and can be easily configured for either left or right-side, tip-up or tip-down carry.

The Lil’ Temperance 3 is an extremely versatile knife that is ideal for everything from casual utilitarian use to life-saving personal defense. It honors its proud heritage while advancing the state of the art of its design to even higher levels of performance.

At the risk of being immodest, Spyderco’s current printed catalog is pretty impressive. At 169 pages and 20.5 ounces (581grams) in weight, it showcases our product line very proudly and offers a wealth of other knife-related information. For Spyderco enthusiasts who want to put their feet up and spend a few hours savoring every page, life doesn’t get much better. However, if you’re looking for a specific knife, knives made with a particular blade steel or handle material, or models designed by a certain collaborator, thumbing through nearly 200 pages can be overwhelming.

Fortunately, there is another solution: Spyderco’s digital catalog and online “flipbook” catalog powered by iPaper. ==Amsterdam Meet==

In early March, Eric Glesser and select members of the Spyderco Crew visited The Netherlands for our 13th annual Amsterdam “Meet.” This extraordinary event brings together nearly 100 passionate Spyderco fans from all over the globe to get an exclusive insider look at the future of Spyderco’s product line. This year’s attendees were treated to approximately 80 new concept models and prototypes that included custom collaborations, in-house designs, generational evolutions of current models, and even a few reborn classics.

Organized by Spyderco’s European Sales Representative Jurphaas Van Rietschoten, the Amsterdam Meet continues to be one of the most remarkable events in the cutlery industry and remains unmatched by any other knife company. While the fortunate few who attended were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience, thanks to the outstanding photographic and video skills of “SpyderCollector,” all knife fans have the opportunity to share in the magic. A trusted friend of Spyderco, SpyderCollector was given exclusive permission to photograph a select number of the knives shared at the Meet. His photos, written descriptions, and technical specs of each knife are available on his web site and are also the subject of lively discussion on the Spyderco Forum. SpyderCollector, aka “Mr. Blonde,” did an amazing job of documenting this year’s Meet, taking more than 1,600 photos and shooting over three hours of video footage.

==Mule Team Handles and Sheaths==

Savvy Spyderco fans are no doubt familiar with our unique Mule Team Project. In the knife industry, a “mule” is a sample knife used for testing. When testing the performance of different steels or the effects of different heat-treatment protocols on the same steel, companies typically make several mules that are completely identical—except for the one variable they’re trying to evaluate. Savvy Spyderco fans are no doubt familiar with the relationship between the Spyderco product line and our economical byrd® line of knives. You’ve probably also noticed that our most popular byrd models—the Cara Cara™ and Meadowlark™—were inspired by their Spyderco brethren, the Endura® and Delica®. While that type of evolutionary inspiration has been the norm, the new Spyderco Polestar™ reverses that trend.

The inspiration for the Polestar actually came from the byrd Raven™—or more accurately, the second-generation Raven 2. Released in 2008, the original Raven was an all-purpose utilitarian folding knife designed by Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser. In 2015, Sal’s obsession with Constant Quality Improvement (C.Q.I.) prompted him to rework the design to incorporate improved ergonomics, enhanced edge geometry, and US-made CTS® BD1 blade steel. The resulting Raven 2 marked a significant turning point for the style and manufacturing quality of the byrd line. It also made die-hard fans of premium Spyderco products stand up and take notice of the iconic lines and impressive features of the Raven 2 design. Soon, customers were clamoring for a true Spyderco version of the knife, Trademark Round Hole™ and all. The response to that demand is the Polestar.

Like the Raven 2, the Polestar was designed specifically for budget-conscious knife users. It packs all the defining features and benefits of our most iconic Spyderco models into a practical, full-service folding knife priced to fit virtually any budget. The heart of the Polestar is its signature leaf-shaped blade, which is precision machined from American-made Carpenter® CTS® BD1 stainless steel to offer outstanding edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening. Its Trademark Round Hole is fully accessible from either side to allow quick, ambidextrous, one-hand opening, while the full-flat grind and distal taper give it an exceptional combination of edge geometry, point utility, and low-friction cutting performance. Unlike the Raven 2, the Polestar’s impressive PlainEdge™ cutting edge extends the full length of the blade and does not include an index-finger choil.

The Polestar’s high-performance blade is paired with an ergonomic handle built with full, skeletonized stainless steel liners. The liners provide excellent structural strength and form the foundation of a sturdy LinerLock mechanism that locks the blade securely open during use. To ensure a secure, hand-filling grip, they are capped with handsome gray G-10 scales with a non-slip “checked” texture. The handle’s open-backed construction style reduces weight and simplifies cleaning, while a strategically placed relief cut in the obverse side scale allows easy release of the lock when closing the knife. A four-position hourglass clip with a broad, triangular base supports all possible carry positions, including right or left-side tip-up or tip-down carry, and an oversized lanyard hole allows the easy attachment of fobs, lanyards, and safety lines.

This allows customers with an advanced appreciation of cutlery steels to experience the performance nuances of exotic blade materials.

With this spirit in mind, Spyderco is proud to introduce several knives featuring K390 MICROCLEAN® steel. Manufactured by Böhler-Uddeholm, K390 is an advanced cold work tool steel produced by the particle metallurgy process. Its sophisticated alloy mix was specifically developed to provide the extreme wear resistance and high compressive strength needed in industrial cutting, blanking, and punching operations. Remarkably, its exceptionally fine, homogeneous microstructure also makes it readily machinable and easy to heat treat. As a blade steel, these qualities translate to outstanding edge retention and excellent toughness. In fact, the FAQ page on Böhler-Uddeholm’s web site openly states “Our best tool steel for edge retention and toughness is Bohler K390...” When a steel manufacturer of their status makes a statement like that, it says a lot.

K390's unique alloy composition includes the following elements: Carbon - 2.47%, Chromium - 4.20%, Molybdenum - 3.80%, Manganese - 0.40%, Vanadium - 9.00%, Tungsten - 1.00%, Cobalt - 2.00%, and Silicon - 0.55%. Note that its relatively modest chromium content is well below the 13% threshold for a stainless steel. As such, it is a true tool steel and must be properly maintained to prevent corrosion.

Spyderco’s first offering in K390 was our MT17 Mule Team knife. In the knife industry, a “mule” is a sample knife used for performance testing. Based on our own extensive in-house tests and feedback from devoted Mule Team fans, we were very excited about K390’s performance. We therefore decided to use it in a special Sprint Run version of the Urban™ Lightweight SLIPIT™. Housed in a distinctive gray fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle, the K390 blade supercharges the cutting performance of the Urban and makes it one of the most capable non-locking cutting tools available.

If you’ve taken the time to review Spyderco’s 2017 Product Guide, you may have noticed another K390-bladed knife on the horizon—the Police™ 4. The latest evolution of our venerable Police Model, this fourth-generation design will feature refined ergonomics and a voracious full-flat-ground K390 blade. It is slated for release later this year.
