The Deacon:

The Spyderco collectors club is an offer to collectors of Spyderco knives.
The collectors club gives you the possibility to receive all Spyderco knives made, with your number on them.
There is of today 200 available numbers opposed to before 1997 when only 100 numbers were available.
The numbers before 2000 were engraved the traditional way, sometime in 2001 that changed to laser engraving.
The Variant- designator is believed to have been added when the club was increased from 100 to 200 numbers in 1997.

The Collector chooses a number from the list of open ones and then choose from the possibilities below.

As of today there's two possible ways to be a member of the collectors club:

1. All variants- The collector receives one of every variation of knife made by Spyderco. In practical terms this means that if Spyderco makes a knife with 2 types of handle and both types of handle in 3 different edges, the collector will receive 6 knives.

So, when the C106 Tasman Salt was released, the all variants collectors got the following:

2. Main models only- The collector receives new SKU's only, and the model of that SKU that Spyderco decides is the main model. Continuing with the picture above, the Main collectors would only get the Black SE model of the C106 as that was the main model.

Exceptions:

*The Mule- team knives had the MT01 (See MT Mule Team for details) in 52100- steel as the Main, and then all collectors got to choose wheter to receive all the others. The others will then be marked with the collectornumber and a V for Variant.

*The C92 Kopa had the Black Micarta C92BMP as main and all collectors got to chose if they wanted that single one or all variants.

Collectors knives will be numbered with a collector number 059 for instance, and then the variants will have a 059V if the collector chooses to receive all variants (as in the picture above).

Oddities:
*When Spyderco released the Hossom series of Fixed blades, the FB16 Jerry Hossom Forester was the main, and the remainding three knives in the series, although they had different SKU's, where considered variants due to the fact that they only differed in size.

*The C120 Mariner Salt was a Variant in the collector program even if it had a new SKU. This was because it was a reissue of an older model, namely the C02 Mariner.

Questions regarding collecting the C18
SE version appears in 1993 brochure, was it ever produced?

Was PE version made for and sold exclusively by Wayne Goddard? Seem to recall hearing this.

1994 Catalog shows a PS C18 with no steel markings, do specimens like that exist in any edge type?

Questions regarding collecting the C18
SE version appears in 1993 brochure, was it ever produced?

Was PE version made for and sold exclusively by Wayne Goddard? Seem to recall hearing this.

1994 Catalog shows a PS C18 with no steel markings, do specimens like that exist in any edge type?

Jess Horn II
The C34 Jess Horn II was introduced in 1995. It was the second of three Jess Horn designs produced as collaboration models by Spyderco, the others being the C27 Jess Horn and the C38 Jess Horn Lightweight. The production versions have a Hollow sabre grind blade with a prominent Swedge grind and a black Micarta handle. In addition to the standard production version which was available in PE and SE, several special versions of the C34 Jess Horn II were produced exclusively for A.G. Russell. Two of these models had the same dimensions as the production model, but featured Full Flat grind blades with a Swedge grind and different colors of micarta. The other three were of a reduced size and are unique, in that there was no production equivalent in any form. They are known as "Baby Horns" and were made in white Micarta with a Full Flat grind blade like those of the full size A.G. Russell Specials, and in black Micarta and all stainless steel with Hollow sabre grind blades like those of the production C34.

Appearance in catalogs
The C34 Jess Horn II first appeared in the 1997 pocket catalog. Prior to that, it was noted as "coming soon" in the 1995 Spyderco Retail Price Sheet.

Description from 1997 Pocket Catalog

"For those who desire a custom design without the associated cost or lengthy wait, Spyderco introduces the second CLIPIT collaboration with Jess Horn. This refined pattern incorporates Jess' precise lines throughout. The scales are made of Micarta in a comfortable shape for everyday use, and the hand-finished premium stainless steel blade is formed in a spearpoint style. The elegant look of this gentleman's lightweight folder makes it worthy of carry for any occasion."

Variations
Plain and serrated versions of the production model, plus the five A.G. Russell Specials noted above.
Most collectible variation
All five of the A.G. Russell Specials command higher prices than the production versions and, as with most collectible Spydercos, there is more collector interest in the

PE production version than in th SE production version.

Questions regarding collecting the C34 Jess Horn II
Collectors Club numbered examples of at least two of the A.G. Russell Special variants exist, are there Collectors Club numbered specimens of all of them?
Production dates for the A.G. Russell Specials? The box for my black Baby Horn is dated 1/97.

"This affordable folder from Spyderco and Jess Horn provides functionality in a custom design. The handle is made from lightweight fiberglass-reinforced nylon resin and includes the name "Jess Horn" in a continuous pattern across the front scale for grip. A black stainless steel clip with a gold Spyderco logo compliments the handle. The hollow-ground blade is formed in a spearpoint style, and the hole in the blade combines with a precision front lock to facilitate smooth one-hand opening action. A high-tech gentleman's knife, the Jess Horn lightweight is appropriate for daily use and special affairs."
"This affordable folder from Spyderco and Jess Horn provides functionality in a custom design.
A black stainless steel clip with a gold Spyderco logo compliments the handle. The hollow-ground blade is formed in a spearpoint style, and the hole in the blade combines with a precision front lock to facilitate smooth one-hand opening action. == Information from the Spyderco catalog on the web ==

Description from the 1997 consumer catalog...

Variations
The original release of the C38 Jess Horn Lightweight was available in both plain and combo (part serrated) edge. The 2006 Sprint Run version was plain edge only.

Jess Horn
The C27 Jess Horn was a collaboration with Jess Horn, one of America's premier custom knife makers and was produced for Spyderco by Moki in Japan. It holds several distinctions. It is the only Spyderco branded folder which does not use the trademark "Spyderhole" round hole opener. Instead it uses an alternate impementation of Spyderco's original patent which consists of a pair of trapezoidal depressions, one on each side of the blade to allow one hand opening. At the time of its introduction, it was the most expensive single folder Spyderco had produced to that date. It is also the only Spyderco branded folder offered with a serrated edge which does not use Spyderco's trademark "Spyderedge" serrations but, instead, uses small serrations of equal size. Finally, it is the only Spdyerco model where a serrated version was produced but the plain edged version was the "main" Collectors Club piece.

Appearance in catalogs
The C27 Jess Horn first appeared in the 1994 Spyderco catalog/brochure. It remained in the catalog until 1998.

History, mentionings from the forums, etc.
Information from the Spyderco catalog on the web
Description from the original 1994 "Welecome to the World of Spyderco" brochure...

"Unlike most CLIPiTs, the Jess Horn model was not designed with a thumb-hole in the blade. It can, however, be easily opened with one hand by using hte trapezoid indent. The handle is embellished with a "jigged bone" that is specially made for Mr. Horn. The front lock incorporates a spring and spacer between the scales as one polished piece. The entire knife reflects Jess's custom style and signature. This is one of the world's finest custom manufactured knives. From the jigged bone handle to the meticulously sculpted stainless clip, this folder boasts precise fit and finish that is second to none in manufacturing. Efen the lanyard hole features attention to detail - it's chamfered and lined. This collaboration between Jess Horn and Spyderco represents a superb value for collectors considering a Jess Horn custom would equal three to four times the cost."

Cost, at that time was $349.95

Variations
As mentioned earlier, the C27 Jess Horn was built in Japan, by Moki. It was available in both plain and serrated edge. While there are no "variants" per se, there are a number of variations in marking. The Collectors Club numbered pieces were numbered on the left bolster and at least some of them do not carry Jess Horn's signature engraved on the blade. Higher numbered pieces were numbered on the blade. Some un-numbered pieces also were produced. Finally, there were some "leftovers" from this run sold by Moki under their own label without the Spyderco name on the blade tang.
