Spyderco’s Chaparral project is a unique approach to the gentlemen’s folding knife genre. Named after a plant native to the Western U.S. that is known for its extreme resilience, the Chaparral series uses a single design format to showcase a variety of distinctive handle materials and texture patterns.

All Chaparral models share the same core features. They are exceptionally thin to minimize their weight and make them very convenient to carry—even when wearing a suit. Their leaf-shaped PlainEdge™ blades are full-flat ground from American-made CTS® XHP stainless steel and handsomely satin finished for near-effortless cutting performance. The blades also include a fully accessible Trademark Round HoleTM for easy one or two-handed opening that, together with a sturdy back lock mechanism and reversible wire clip make all Chaparrals completely symmetrical and their operation fully ambidextrous.

Where Chaparral models show their individuality is in their handles. The first member of the family, released in 2011, featured skeletonized full stainless steel liners and subtly textured carbon fiber scales. It was followed in 2012 by the Chaparral Titanium, which boasted solid titanium scales precision machined with an intricate geometric pattern. Continuing the titanium theme were the Stepped Titanium and Blue Stepped Titanium models, released in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Both feature an incredibly detailed “stepped” pattern machined into both scales. Composed entirely of straight lines, this amazing design creates the illusion of curves and detailed geometric shapes. In the Blue Stepped version, the scales are anodized a brilliant shade of blue partway through the machining process to create a spectacular contrast of alternating blue and silver surfaces. Earlier this year, we rounded out the Chaparral family with a version featuring scales made from Raffir®—composite material made with fine layers of crinkled metal mesh encapsulated in a translucent epoxy resin.

Although we are admittedly proud of the Chaparral family and the variety and pride of ownership it offers, we still felt there was something missing—a lightweight, affordable, user-oriented expression of the Chaparral spirit optimized for everyday carry. To fill that void, we created the all-new Chaparral Lightweight.

The Chaparral Lightweight offers the same refined design theme, functionality, and cutting performance as its brothers, but with a simple, reliable, and affordable injection-molded handle. Its tough gray fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) handle reduces its weight to a scant 2.1 ounces—22% lighter than its titanium-handled counterparts. At the same time, its molded construction allows it to incorporate a new style of Spyderco’s high-traction Bi-Directional Texturing™ pattern. Despite its slim profile and light weight, this version of the Chaparral still offers the strength of nested, skeletonized stainless steel liners and a stainless steel backspacer. They ensure excellent structural strength and the precise alignment of all key components.

Like the other versions of the Chaparral, the Lightweight has a mid-positioned back lock mechanism that locks the blade securely open and allows safe, easy one-handed closing. Its 50/50 index-finger choil straddles the juncture of the blade and handle to provide a solid purchase for a forward, “choked-up” grip. Despite the knife’s compact size, this feature allows even larger hands a full, four fingered grip. Matching “jimping” (grooves) on the choil and thumb ramp offer additional texture for even greater control during precise cutting tasks. A reversible deep-pocket wire clip attached to the butt end of the handle supports left or right-side tip-up carry and keeps this remarkable knife discreetly poised for instant access.

==The Darn Dao FB41GP==

The late Bob Lum was a legend in the knifemaking world. In addition to his consummate skills as a custom knifemaker, Lum had the uncanny ability to translate traditional Asian cutting tools and edged weapons into modern form. Best known as the true father of the “Americanized tanto”—one of the most popular blade shapes of all time—Lum was also instrumental in helping knife enthusiasts to understand and appreciate the deep historical significance of Asian blade patterns.

One of Lum’s rarest custom designs was his homage to the classical ''dan dao'' or “single knife” of the Chinese martial arts. In Chinese culture, anything with a single cutting edge is regarded as a knife—regardless of the length of the blade. This is in contrast to a sword, which they regard as a double-edged weapon. The ''dan dao''—or as Lum preferred to Romanize it—Darn Dao—was one of the primary weapons of the Chinese martial arts and typically had a broad blade about two feet long, a substantial disk-shaped guard, and a flared pommel. Designed primarily for swift, powerful cutting and chopping tactics, it was also a highly effective thrusting weapon.

Spyderco founder Sal Glesser was one of the few people fortunate enough to purchase one of Lum’s handmade Darn Dao. Although Glesser had long wanted to make a production version of the knife, the skills and technology of the knife industry had not evolved to the point that they could do this extremely special design justice. As the capabilities of our best-in-class manufacturing partners steadily improved, we felt the time had finally come to make it a reality.

Spyderco’s expression of Lum’s Darn Dao is expertly full-flat ground from thick CPM® 154—a state-of-the-art powder metallurgy stainless steel that offers increased toughness over the conventional ingot version of this alloy. Its long, unsharpened swedge ensures an acute point, while its tapered full tang reduces the knife’s weight and gives it extraordinary balance. Contoured black G-10 scales, an integral twin guard, and a flared pommel ensure a positive grip during high-speed manipulation. A generously sized lined hole offers further insurance, allowing the easy attachment of a lanyard or safety cord.

Every Darn Dao comes complete with a high-quality zippered storage pouch and a handsome leather sheath with an integral loop for belt carry. The sheath’s open-backed construction and thumb-break-style snap ensure positive retention, while still allowing a swift draw.

In addition to its other amazing qualities, the Darn Dao also holds a special place in Spyderco’s history as our second “Flash Batch” product. A Flash Batch is similar to a Sprint Run in that is it a truly distinctive, one-time-only event. However, whereas Sprint Runs are based on current or previously produced models, Flash Batches introduce a brand new design that will never be duplicated in the exact same form again. To make them even more unique and collectible, Flash Batches are individually serialized with a laser-engraved number on every blade.

==Exclusives==

An Exclusive is a special configuration of an established Spyderco design that is produced for a single wholesale customer or distributor. Every Exclusive represents a unique, one-of-a-kind combination of blade steel, handle material, handle color, and sometimes even blade and hardware coatings. Although multiple runs of it may be made, as its name implies, it is exclusive to that customer, will not be duplicated in that exact form for anyone else, and is commercially available only through that source.

Spyderco has had the pleasure of working on Exclusive projects with some of the leading dealers and distributors in the knife industry. In many cases, we have helped them develop signature “looks” for entire families of Exclusive products and, in the process, created extremely distinctive, high-performance variations of some of our most popular models. Since Exclusives are, by definition, limited-edition production, they are also very desirable and highly collectible—especially for Spyderco fans whose interests focus on specific models and their variants.

All smart companies value feedback from their customers about the products and services they provide. The really smart ones actively solicit that feedback through the use of focus groups and other types of consumer research. But the ultimate way for a company to connect with customers and understand what they really want is to do it before that company even makes the product—during the concept and prototype stages.

Done properly, engaging knowledgeable, passionate consumers early in the product development stage can help a company avoid corporate “nearsightedness” and focus its efforts on the projects its customers really want. That revolutionary concept is what Spyderco “Meets” are all about.

A Spyderco Meet is a limited engagement event in which company founders Sal and Gail Glesser and/or their son Eric share prototypes and concept models of the knives we are considering manufacturing with a select group of knife enthusiasts. Besides the knives themselves, they share the story behind each design, its logic, its special features and intellectual property, and Spyderco’s aspirations for the market we hope to reach with it. In return, we are rewarded by the honest reactions and insightful feedback of the attendees, which we use to prioritize, modify, and sometimes even abandon our plans for each model.

Meets are typically organized by key members of the Spyderco staff and close friends of the company, often with the assistance of our major distributors. Notice of an upcoming Meet is generally posted on Spyderco’s General Discussion Internet forum and registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis until the planned capacity—normally less than 100—is reached. Attendees often travel great distances to participate in Meets and are rewarded not only with rare glimpses into Spyderco’s product development plans, but with gift bags packed with one-of-a-kind souvenirs created specifically for these special events.

Spyderco’s first Meet was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2004. Since then, we have returned to Amsterdam numerous times and have conducted other Meets in England, Germany, Colorado, and most recently, Taiwan. Although only the participants in each Meet get to see all the knives we share (typically more than 50 models), thanks to the generous help of our close friend “Mr. Blonde,” our Amsterdam Meets also result in “sneak peeks” of some of our upcoming models. Mr. Blonde graciously posts high-quality photos and descriptions of these models on his web site, Spydercollector.com, and on Spyderco’s General Discussion forum.

Meets are a uniquely “Spyderco” institution. They allow us to connect with our customers in ways that no other company in the cutlery industry can. We are extremely grateful for that and look forward to expanding this unique tradition in the years to come.

==UPDATE Reinhold Rhino==

Designed by Michael Reinhold, the Reinhold Rhino is one of the most eagerly anticipated designs in Spyderco’s current catalog. Unfortunately, the first production run of this knife did not meet our stringent quality-control standards. We could not, in good faith, release it knowing it was less than what our customers—and the knife’s designer—deserve.

After careful consideration, we have decided to move production of the Reinhold Rhino to our manufacturing facility in Taichung, Taiwan. To take full advantage of their proven expertise, we have also decided to upgrade the design to make it truly worth the wait. The upgrades that will be incorporated into the Rhino will include:

* CTS® XHP blade steel
* Peel-ply textured carbon fiber/G-10 laminate handle scales
* Phosphor bronze washers

We understand that this plan of action is a departure from the original concept of the Reinhold Rhino; however, we are confident that it is the best way to achieve a worthy, high-performance expression of Michael's design.
Based on the change of materials, the Rhino will receive a new SKU. We will share that information and any additional details concerning its pricing and availability as soon as they become available. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

==Law Enforcement Seconds Sale==

On April 30, 2017, Spyderco conducted its first Law Enforcement Seconds Sale at our Factory Outlet store in Golden, Colorado. A smaller version of our famous Fall seconds sale, this event was organized specifically for law enforcement officers and first responders in Colorado to give them an opportunity to purchase cosmetically blemished knives and select overstock items at deeply discounted prices.

This inaugural event was organized in close cooperation with the Denver Police Academy and attracted officers, firefighters, and other first responders from various jurisdictions around the Denver metropolitan area. The sale was a tremendous success and we were honored to have the opportunity to share our products with the brave men and women who attended and personally thank them for their service to the community.

Recently, the Salt Series experienced another quantum leap with the addition of LC200N blade steel. LC200N is also a nitrogen-rich alloy, but it achieves its hardness through a conventional heat-treatment process. While it does contain a trace amount of carbon, its high nitrogen and chromium content give it superior corrosion resistance and toughness, even at the high degrees of hardness required for knife blades. Our first-generation Salt folding knives were based on the handle designs of the Delica® 3 and Endura® 3 models. Introduced in 1998, the Delica and Endura 3s eliminated the old-school molded integral pocket clip in favor of a reversible steel clip. Secured by a threaded barrel bolt assembly that did double duty as a lanyard hole, the metal clip mounted to the butt end of the handle and supported ambidextrous tip-up carry. The handles of those knives were one-piece injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN), complete with Spyderco’s dimpled “Volcano Grip™” texture pattern.

Shortly after the Salt Series was launched, Spyderco transcended the Delica and Endura 3 with our improved fourth-generation models. The handle designs of the Delica 4 and Endura 4 incorporate a number of significant advantages over their predecessors. In addition to improved ergonomics, they feature our high-traction Bi-Directional Texturing™ pattern for outstanding grip security, even when wet. They also offer the versatility of a four-position pocket clip that supports both tip-up and tip-down carry on both sides of the body and makes carry and operation of these designs 100% ambidextrous.

One of the features of the fourth-generation handles—nested, skeletonized stainless steel liners—provides excellent structural strength and a solid anchor for mounting the clip. While this is an advantage on the Delica and Endura, it is a liability on knives intended for use in and around water, since the internal cavities of the handle scales can retain water. As such, we continued to use the third-generation handle designs on all our Salt models because of the virtues of their one-piece FRN construction… until now.

The handles of our new Salt models are identical to the Delica 4 and Endura 4 patterns, but with one major difference: Instead of nested liners, the handle scales are molded from solid FRN and include four sets of threaded stainless steel inserts to allow attachment of the four-position clip.

The first two second-generation Salts to be released are the Salt 2 and the Tasman Salt 2. The Salt 2 combines all the salient features of the Delica 4 Lightweight model with the 100% rustproof advantages of H-1 steel, a black-coated titanium pocket clip, and special non-rusting handle hardware. Like its predecessor, it is available with a high-visibility yellow handle and satin-finished blade and with a black handle and non-reflective black TiCN-coated blade. Both these versions are offered with a choice of PlainEdge or fully serrated SpyderEdge cutting edges.

Built on the exact same handle, the Tasman 2 integrates all the salient features of the Delica 4 Lightweight, the 100% rustproof advantages of H-1 steel, and the powerhouse cutting ability of a hawkbill blade profile. It will be available in both PlainEdge and SpyderEdge configurations and with a choice of a black or yellow handle.

All versions of the Salt 2 and Tasman Salt 2 will be shipping soon. Additional second-generation Salts—including larger knives based on the Endura 4 handle profile—will join them in the coming months. In true Spyderco style, even our best knives keep getting better!

During early June, Spyderco proudly participated in the 36th annual Blade Show at Atlanta’s Cobb Galleria. In conjunction with the show, BladeSports International, Inc.™ conducted its 2017 World Competition, in which competitors tackled a demanding series of tests to challenge their cutting skill, power, and accuracy. Spyderco-sponsored Donavon Phillips took third place in the men’s division, and took even greater pride in the first-place finish of his cutting protégé James Clifton.

Donavon was also honored to represent BladeSports International in receiving Blade magazine’s Industry Achievement Award. Carpenter® Technology Corporation's Micro-Melt® A11 is a particle metallurgy version of A11 tool steel. Also known as AISI A11, K294 (Böhler-Uddeholm), CPM® 10V (Crucible®), and a variety of other names, it is commonly referred to “in-house” as simply PMA11 (“particle metallurgy” A11). No matter what you call it, this material is something that should be on every knife lover’s radar.

PMA11 is an extremely wear-resistant tool steel that is capable of achieving a high working hardness. One of the first high-vanadium particle metallurgy steels, it was developed to provide superior wear resistance while maintaining toughness and machining characteristics comparable to D2 and M2. In industrial applications, it rapidly set the standard for highly wear-resistant tooling and it is often used instead of carbide in cold work tooling applications.

In the world of knives, PMA11 (in its CPM 10V form) is one of the favorite steels of renowned custom knifemaker and Spyderco collaborator Phil Wilson. An avid student of metallurgy and an accomplished outdoorsman, Wilson eagerly experiments with new and different blade steels and heat-treating protocols and personally tests all his wares in the field. His meticulously crafted knives feature thin, flat grinds and distal tapers that produce excellent edge geometry and balance, but also demand the most out of his steels. The fact that PMA11/CPM 10V is one of his favorites therefore speaks volumes about its performance as a blade material.

PMA11's advanced alloy composition includes: Carbon: 2.45%, Manganese: 0.50%, Silicon: 0.90%, Chromium: 5.30%, Molybdenum: 1.30%, Vanadium: 9.50%, Sulfur 0.08%. Its large volume of hard vanadium carbides provides substantially better wear resistance than typical high-carbon, high-chromium die steels such as D2 and D7. The particle metallurgy process further enhances these properties by greatly minimizing alloy segregation and ensuring a fine, homogenous microstructure. In knife blades, these qualities translate to outstanding edge retention and good toughness, especially in shorter knives. Note, however, that PMA11 is a tool steel and must be maintained properly to safeguard it against corrosion.

Based on demand from our customers and glowing reviews of Phil Wilson’s custom knives in CPM 10V, Spyderco has decided to use PMA11 (or more precisely, Carpenter's Micro-Melt A11 expression of it) as the steel for our 26th Mule Team blade. We could not, in good faith, release it knowing it was less than what our customers—and the knife’s designer—deserve.

After careful consideration, we have decided to move production of the Reinhold Rhino to our manufacturing facility in Taichung, Taiwan. To take full advantage of their proven expertise, we have also decided to upgrade the design to make it truly worth the wait. The upgrades that will be incorporated into the Rhino will include:

· CTS® XHP blade steel

· Peel-ply textured carbon fiber/G-10 laminate handle scales

· Phosphor bronze washers

We understand that this plan of action is a departure from the original concept of the Reinhold Rhino; however, we are confident that it is the best way to achieve a worthy, high-performance expression of Michael's design.

On April 30, 2017, Spyderco conducted its first Law Enforcement Seconds Sale at our Factory Outlet store in Golden, Colorado. A smaller version of our famous Fall seconds sale, this event was organized specifically for law enforcement officers and first responders in Colorado to give them an opportunity to purchase cosmetically blemished knives and select overstock items at deeply discounted prices.

This inaugural event was organized in close cooperation with the Denver Police Academy and attracted officers, firefighters, and other first responders from various jurisdictions around the Denver metropolitan area. The sale was a tremendous success and we were honored to have the opportunity to share our products with the brave men and women who attended and personally thank them for their service to the community.

That revolutionary concept is what Spyderco “Meets” are all about.

A Spyderco Meet is a limited engagement event in which company founders Sal and Gail Glesser and/or their son Eric share prototypes and concept models of the knives we are considering manufacturing with a select group of knife enthusiasts. Besides the knives themselves, they share the story behind each design, its logic, its special features and intellectual property, and Spyderco’s aspirations for the market we hope to reach with it. In return, we are rewarded by the honest reactions and insightful feedback of the attendees, which we use to prioritize, modify, and sometimes even abandon our plans for each model.

Meets are typically organized by key members of the Spyderco staff and close friends of the company, often with the assistance of our major distributors. '''A:''' No. While the C81 Paramilitary is sometimes shortened to "Para" by fans online, the C81 Paramilitary and the C223 Para 3 are two different models. To add to the confusion, there was a batch of C223's with the incorrect label of "Paramilitary 3" on the boxes, but [https://forum.spyderco.com/viewtopic.php?p=1322686&sid=fb52c925a0aa06358d85e1ca30cfb8ef#p1322686 this was an error]. The "3" in Para 3 refers to the blade length and is part of the model name, so the "3" does not signify its generational status. As to what a second generation Para 3 would be called, we can't say. But if a third generation Paramilitary comes out (Paramilitary 3), the "Para" shorthand for the C81 will have to be dropped, as "Para 3" is already taken.

LC 200 N is produced by Zapp Steel and is a derivative of Cronidur 30.It is a high nitrogen alloyed tool steel produced by a combination of the PESR (Pressurized Electric Slag Remelting) Process and “smart forging” technology. This results in an amazing increase in the steel’s purity and a very fine and homogenous microstructure. The material’s advantages include excellent machinability and polishability, outstanding dimensional stability after heat treatment, and superior corrosion resistance and toughness—even at high hardness.

LC 200 N is a high nitrogen alloyed tool steel which exhibits superior corrosion resistance combined with high toughness even at hardness up to 60 HRc. Combining PESR-Process (Pressurized Electric Slag Remelting) with a smart forging technology, an amazing increase in cleanliness and structure, which means a very fine and homogenious microstructure, can be achieved. Primary advantage is excellent machinability and polishability as well as a high dimensional stability after heat treatment. LC200N is a high nitrogen alloyed tool steel produced by a combination of the PESR (Pressurized Electric Slag Remelting) Process and “smart forging” technology.
