The C22 Michael Walker with carbon fiber handles was first introduced in 1994. In 1996 a Lightweight variation was introduced, initially denoted as C37 Michael Walker Lightweight, this variation's SKU was changed to C22BK in 2000. In late 1997 the CX06 Experimental 6 batch of the Michael Walker design was produced, featuring black almite coated aluminum handles. In a 2005 Sprint run another variation with blue almite coated aluminum handles was produced.

:The Carbon fiber came from the Sauber F1 race team.<br>
:The knife was built for us by HP Klotzli.
:"...<br>
:HP Klotzli came up with the idea for a Walker/Spyderco collaboration. He also swanted to build it. It was his idea to<br>
:use carbon fiber and he worked with Michael to develop manufacturing methods. I worked with Michael on the design.<br>
:Michael is quite a genius.

:HP made the knives for Spyderco. We made the ATS-34 blades in Golden and shipped them to Switzerland. He<br>
:developed the carbon fiber and titanium mfg methods. HP does great work.

:We thought about working with HP to make a slightly larger version of the C22 Walker. His wife Beah, had drawn a<br>
:beautiful larger version by incrementally extending the pattern.
Historic information provided by HP Klotzli (email communication 2009/03/24, informal translation from German):

* A total of 1165 C22CF were produced.
* The exact numbers per edge grind type cannot be determined anymore. The Spyderco order consisted of 500x PE and 500x PS.
* Klotzli delivered knives with "naked" blades to Spyderco. Spyderco did the engravings and numbering on the blades.
* Glossy vs. matte carbon handles: Spyderco's quality demands were high. Initially only perfect carbon handles with the glossy surface were accepted. That resulted in more than 50% wastage with the carbon. Klotzli then started matting the carbon handles, so that fine scratches (that were unavoidable during production) disappeared.
* "Klotzli" vs. "Swiss made" engravings on the blade: Initially it was agreed that all three names should appear on the blade: Spyderco, Walker, Klotzli. At some point Spyderco stopped putting Klotzli on the blade (and used "Swiss made" instead).
* The Klotzlis are not in possession of the drawing by Bea Klotzli of the larger version of the C22.
Variations
The C22 features a Walker Liner Lock and a spear point shaped blade.

The C22 with CF handles and titanium liners were made in Switzerland by Klotzli. Spyderco individually numbered them (exceptions?). Two CF handle types exist:
* CF glossy (and some without numbers?)
* CF matte
Earlier produced C22s with CF have glossy (shiny, polished) handles and later ones matte. There are also two types of engravings on the blade: The "Klötzli" put on earlier blades was later replaced by "Swiss Made".
There also exist C22CF blades with lasered names and number instead of engraved (in the [1500,1699] range?).
C22s with an engraved number in the 1700-1799 range have been reported.

All other C22 variations (incl. CX06) were made in Seki-City, Japan.

There are a couple of possibilities to link. Basically you can divide links into internal and external ones. If you want to add an internal link, write the name of the page you want to link to within double square brackets. When you then save your page, a link to the page you've specified will appear. If the page already exists, it is displayed in blue, empty pages are displayed in red.

The first letter of the target page is automatically capitalized and spaces are represented as underscores (typing an underscore in the link will have a similar effect as typing a space, but is not recommended, since the underscore will also be shown in the text).

Also, use named links where ever possible! Instead of using the automatically numbered unnamed links, use footnotes!

The Civilian is a knife with special qualities. It’s a collectors dream with all it’s variations, different steels, etc. Originally developed for self-defence the civilian is both beautiful with it’s reverse S blade and very useful if you have self-defence needs.

Appearance in catalogs
The Civilian appears in the 2000 dealer's catalog, the 2001 dealer catalog, the 2002 dealer's catalog and with the newer bladesteel (VG-10) in the 2003 dealer's catalog The Matriarch appears in in both, the 2002 and 2003 catalogs.
Designer
Unknown at this time, probably Sal Glesser

History, mentionings etc. from the forums
A little info from Sal on Numbers of CF Civilians from the Spyderco- forum:

There is a change in the quantity of CF Civvies being made. From 500 to 1200.
We learned when ordering began that 500 would not be enough. If 100 (half) collectors order all variations (4), that's 80% of the run. After Spyderco crew, there would not be any available for anyone else.
I do not believe that this change will affect the long term value of the piece.
Thank you for your kind understanding to this change sal

Information from the Spyderco catalog on the web
"In the 1990s Spyderco was approached by a specialized branch of U.S. law enforcement about making a knife for their undercover agents. These plain-clothes LEOs found themselves in situations where they often could not carry a firearm but carrying a knife was not a problem. Most had no formal training in self-defense tactics or MBC but as a last resort could use a blade to protect or extricate themselves from a life-threatening situation. This was how the Civilian model came to be.
The Civilian has a patented reverse "S" blade that's intended to be used like an oversized claw. The tip is ground to an ultra-thin profile. Deeply curved and full at the belly, the VG-10 hollow-ground blade excels in slicing and is available fully SpyderEdged. Because of its distinctly specialized features it is not intended or designed for general utility or everyday use. Curved in all the right places for ergonomic use and retention of the knife, the handle is black G-10. Mounted for tip-down carry with a custom curved black clip, the knife rides deeply and unobtrusively in a pocket. One of the most specialized CLIPITS in the Spyderco line-up, the Civilian is available in limited quantities."
Variations
The Spyderco C12 Civilian and Matriarch is a Spyderco that has been made in several variations. All made in Seki city in Japan.
The C12S in bare aluminum or the C12GP in G10 are the two variations believed to be most collectible Civilians.

The C12SGY grey FRN Matriarch is the one believed to be the most collectible Matriarch.
The Carbon fiber Civilians are of course collectors items as well.
Spyderco Inc. is a company started in 1978 by Sal Glesser.
Sal and his wife Gail started with the production of sharpening stones and then went on to make knives in 1981 with the C01 Worker being the first model.

In 1976 working in Redding, California, Sal Glesser took his Portable Hand from its initial concept through the design, testing, patenting procedure, production to marketing the finished product. The Hand was designed to hold objects securely freeing up hands so intricate work could be more easily completed. It had a multitude of uses in industry and the home. The company name Spyderco came from the hand looking like a spider.

During the five years that the Hand was being manufactured Sal invented the Tri-angle Sharpmaker and the first Clipit knife, the Worker. In little more than 20 years Spyderco have revolutionised the knife industry!

So how did Sal and his crew do it. It all boils down to knowing what the end user really wants. Sal, his wife Gail and the Spyderco team attended fairs and shows all over the US talking to people and finding out what they needed in a knife. Demonstrating and selling the Sharpmaker must have won over huge numbers of knife owners who would come up to the booth with a blunt knife and walk away with a scary sharp blade.

Their early success at these venues funded their research and development. When Sal was unable to find a manufacturer in the US that could meet his quality requirements Al Mar introduced him to some of his business contacts in Japan who they were able to convince that the Clipit was worthy of their involvement. Sal adopted Al Mar’s front lock design for his Clipit and in turn Al used the Spyderco serrations and clothing clip on his knives. The principle of sharing knowledge is still used by Spyderco today. The clip was an idea Sal had when he found how useful a brass frog key holder was. The frogs front legs and feet held onto the top of your pocket with the frogs head peeping out. The keys were always readlily available, not lost amongst the rest of your pockets contents. Sal started working on the knife clip.

Larger premises were needed to house the factory and the mail-order business and eventually in 1998 Spyderco moved to its current location on the outskirts of Golden, Colorado. High performance was and still is the trade mark of a Spyderco knife. As one Spyderco brochure puts it “Our success rests on the simple theory that consumers will always gravitate towards the better performing product. Since 1981, Spyderco has been developing pocket cutlery with original features that have become industry standards worldwide, and each represents the performance, simplicity and longevity that you can expect from each knife in the Spyderco Clipit line.”

The Clipit featured the patented hole in the blade for single hand opening; a razor sharp edge; a clip for use on the belt, waistband, boot or even bra and a locking blade.& nbsp; What a combination! Spyderco wanted to make the ultimate “using” knife. To provide every day carry knives to people whose jobs or circumstances required a no-nonsense highly effective cutting tool. They certainly succeeded!

This is a collaboration model and the design partner is Mr. Wayne Goddard, a master smith in the American Bladesmith Society. The design is unique and goes back to a custom model of Wayne, called “Odin’s claw”.

Information from the Spyderco catalog
Over thirty years ago, Wayne Goddard set out to create a heftier, stronger knife that would hold a better edge. Today Wayne is a historian of the folding knife and creator of this Spyderco/Goddard collaboration series. This design is a composite of hundreds of different Goddard folders and is available in three sizes. The 50/50 combination blade incorporates the Spyderco Trademark Round Hole and eliminates the “hump” just above the hole. The blade has just enough belly to be effective, and the tip is reinforced to accommodate heavy-duty work. The slim scales are made of Micarta to provide strength, lightweight handling and attractive styling. The handle includes a built-in “guard” to provide optimum protection against sliding up on the blade, and the clip is positioned high on the knife for convenient carry (note that the Baby Wayne Goddard does not have a clip). Each of the three sizes performs well in a variety of situations, and each makes a great utility tool.

The knife in itself features a sturdy drop-point blade, hollow saber grind, Mar-McBurnettte front lock, clip and opening hole. The designer’s signature is etched onto each blade. The micarta handled knives have the standard clip for tip-down, the FRN variations offer ambidextrous clip for tip-up carry.

SpyderKeys and Hummingbirds are the same model. The early ones were all serrated and the later ones partially serrated with a key ring. All had SS bolsters (except SS model), clip-point, locking blades and are made in Japan, boxed in velvet "jewelry" type boxes. Most of the knives are embellished with various materials. In addition three are produced as tie clips.
