Flippers are a special breed of one-hand-opening knife. The brainchild of the late custom knifemaker Kit Carson, their defining feature is a small integral tab near the heel of the blade that protrudes from the handle when the knife is closed. Stroking or pressing this tab with your index finger generates leverage to rotate the blade swiftly and smoothly into the open position. As a novel supplement or alternative to our Trademark Round Hole, flippers have become an increasingly popular feature on Spyderco knives. They are also a driving force behind some of our most innovative new designs, including models that combine flippers with our patented Compression Lock mechanism.
